historical tours

went to a tour on USS constitution last month;
watching videos online about Teacher Yuan giving lectures on Chinese history for the past couple of weeks;
visited the art museum twice last week (plus the first time a year ago);
went to a tour about historical pianos two days ago~

Yuan mentioned in one of his lectures: Guanzi(管子) said "When the warehouse and storage is filled, people will only then care about manners, when they have food and cloth, they know honor and shame. "(仓廪实而知礼节,衣食足而知荣辱。)
here, lots of average American families are not richer than (most) average city Chinese families; but they would like to spend plenty of money and time (especially) on things they are interested.
I guess the living environment is more stressful and competitive in China in general, but maybe people need to start to think about what they really like, before they even forget, besides more money.

horsecart times

saw some comments about Japan nuclear incident from nytimes today:

"...Of course, we Americans need to cure our energy addictions - car pool and/or improve public transportation; get rid of the pick-up trucks, SUVs, and minivans, ATVs, snowmobiles... learn to live with less - a lot less - air conditioning etc., etc. I'm not holding my breath."

oh no, those are what Chinese people are trying so hard to get now!
